The width goes up for the same reason: 38 mm spreads the load and stops a loaded belt folding over on itself. If nothing hangs off it, the extra width is just bulk under a shirt.

Will it set off an airport scanner?

The metal buckles will. We make non-metal webbing belts for exactly that reason, and their cards say so.

Can I wash a webbing belt?

The strap, by hand, in cool water. The buckle should come off first if it is designed to, and it should be dry before it goes back on.

Is a work belt strong enough for a holster?

Some are and some are not, and the honest answer is that we cannot promise it for a specific holster. Width and stiffness are on every card so the comparison is at least possible.
